Parents of Juniors! The 3 Top Things You Should Be Thinking About
1. Financial Fit. Get real with the cost of college. The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2021-2022 school year is $43,775 at private colleges, $28,238 for out-of-state students at public schools and $11,631 for state residents at public schools. Discuss the facts with your spouse, child and anyone else who has a say. The only thing more devastating than a student not being admitted to their favorite school is being admitted and realizing it makes zero financial sense.

2. Campus Visits. In-Person and
Virtual. Many campuses have reopened to prospective students but check each college website for details and to schedule a formal tour. To greatly maximize the campus visit, encourage your child to explore the virtual visit experiences offered by almost every college as they have seriously upped their virtual game.
Hack: Have your student connect with the regional rep and ask about sitting in on a class and connecting with a current student. And schedule a meeting with the Financial Aid office. Based on your student's profile (GPA/scores) begin to inquire about your expected out-of-pocket costs.
3. Testing. I couldn’t be more over the stress around admissions testing if I tried. In March of 2020, there were approximately 500 test-optional colleges. Today, there are north of 1,815. Why? Because - pandemic. Fast forward; the test optional movement is holding ground. Data from the previous two admissions cycles indicates that students who submitted scores as part of their application review were by and large admitted at a higher rate than students who did not submit scores as part of their admissions review. Testing remains stressful. Support your student and help them manage the anxiety and pressure around this big unknown.
