One of my best friend’s daughters is a recent graduate of Santa Clara University. She had an amazing 4 years (yes, she graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 4 years) and is now gainfully employed in Florida. I won’t bore you with the details of the video Snapchats she used to send me, showing off her remotely powered robots, but I will tell you that my recent visit to Santa Clara confirmed her experience.
You only get one chance to make a first impression and Santa Clara did not disappoint. I was fascinated by the openness and ease with which the student panel answered questions, it’s just not that common. Our guide, who was delightful, ambitious and 1st gen so impressed me with his intelligence, humor and relatability that I gave him my contact information to follow up regarding a potential job in Denver. He told the story of how SCU was the only school on his list to offer a financial aid package that worked.
Walking through the main food hall, I not only found a variety of organic and delicious food options (this is California, after all), but a lot of laughter and some kind of a music performance going on in the corner. Let me say, this is in stark contrast to what I witnessed at another private school in the area.
If you’re looking for a close-knit community, at a gorgeous campus and location, consider Santa Clara. As is true with most ‘religiously-affiliated’ schools, Santa Clara just felt safe. Not a small thing, when one considers story after story of sex assault and too much booze on college campuses. If I could do it again, I’d attend Santa Clara, although I’m not sure I’d be admitted. 2013-2014 Acceptance Rate – 50%.
